A certain kind of astrologer will wax lyrical about Libra’s need for relationship, their sweetness and their peace-loving nature, but that is only one side of this dual sign. Libra’s are fighters, they are argumentative, they are like a dog with a bone, and do not let go easily, even as they fight with grace and style. Their intelligence can be ferocious and laser pointed. They are masters of the elegant putdown, withering contempt and forensic evisceration of their opponents. AOC is a case in point.
‘Give people the respect of your honest opinion, and always meet them where they’re at.’[iv]
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or AOC as she is known as, is an American politician, activist, and community organizer. A member of the Democratic Party, she has been the U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district since January 3, 2019. On election, she became the youngest woman to serve in Congress at twenty-nine, a classic Saturn return showing.
AOC with three planets, including her midheaven in Libra, shows the fierce, cerebral warrior that she is. Her work in Congress, especially her grilling of big business and speaking truth the power is legendary. She refused to be cowed by the old misogynist and racist power structures. When derided for having been a waitress, she replied that most Americans would respect her for being hard working. Implacable, fearless (that warrior Aries moon) deceptively charming, Libra/Sagittarius lulls her political opponents into false confidence and then she forensically eviscerates them.
‘There is so much fear and hate. We must negate it with active, courageous love.’[iii]
AOC has a Cardinal Grand Cross in the angular houses, so this is a chart of someone who will be in the public eye (1st and 10th houses) and break the mold (4th house). Her strong Mercury in Libra is conjunct her Libra MC and is opposing that radical, feisty, fearless Moon in Aries conjunct the IC. Both are square the Uranus, Saturn and Neptune conjunction in Capricorn (the sign of government) in the 1st house of public recognition. Saturn in its own sign gives power, fine intelligence and sure footed ambition to navigate the corridors of power. These planets are opposite the 7th house exalted Jupiter in Cancer, widely conjunct Chiron at 16′ degrees, which brings the Sun and Mars into the Grand Cross at 16′ and 20′ Libra respectively.
This is both a warrior chart, Sun Mars conjunction , Moon in Aries and a compassionate and paternalistic (in the best way) person, Jupiter in Cancer opposing Saturn in Capricorn. With that erudite Mercury in Libra conjunct her MC, her words have power.
When Ocasio-Cortez made her maiden speech on the floor of Congress in January 2019, within 12 hours, the video of her four-minute speech set the record as C-SPAN’s most-watched Twitter video of a member of the House of Representatives.
On her swearing in, on January 3rd 2019, the Moon was around 7′ Sagittarius so it would have passed over her Ascendant at 15′ Sagittarius one point. This is the classic shining a light on someone. Jupiter was at 12′ Sagittarius and would cross over her Ascendant later that month. Jupiter transits are especially powerful for Sagittarius Ascendant, Sun or Moon people, they are often literally catapulted up in their lives. Saturn showed up again, it was at 11′ Capricorn having passed the opposition of Jupiter and the conjunction of her natal Saturn at 8′ Capricorn. Again, this is classic Saturn return territory, stepping into a new role, accepting responsibility and status. As her Saturn was dignified and in her 1st house, her Saturn return would raise her public profile.
She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and a former Bernie Sanders ‘staffer,’. She has a degree in International Relations and Economics from Boston University. Before running for Congress, AOC was a community organizer working in the Bronx and also educational director for the 2017 Northeast Collegiate World Series for the National Hispanic Institute. Active on social media (as you would expect an air sign) she has over nine million followers. She has a razor sharp mind and has no fear of speaking truth to power and tackling contentious issues.
On race,
‘Black folks are descendants of slaves that were imported, quote-unquote by slave owners, to the United States for the explicit purpose of cultivating crops. And it was predicated on white supremacy and racial superiority, but we have to understand that white supremacy exists for a reason, and they exist for a very specific cultural and economic reasons. And LBJ talked about this — like, if you can convince a poor white man that he’s superior to a black man, he’ll empty his pockets for you.
And so it’s not just economic reasons why racism exists but there are economic reasons why racism is perpetuated and incentivized. More of that’s housing, income, et cetera. And like I said on Monday with Ta-Nehisi, until America tells the truth about itself we’re never going to heal.
And this — it’s like this thing that as a culture we hide… it’s like this big wound with a big ugly scab on it, and it’s just going to stay this itchy thing that we keep going back to until we just deal with it.’[i]
On corruption in politics,
‘What we are seeing now is a ruling class of corporations and a very small elite that have captured government. The Koch brothers own every Republican in the Senate. They own ’em. They don’t cast a vote unless their sugar daddies tell ’em what to do. But seventy percent of Americans believe in Medicare for all. Ninety percent of Americans believe we need to get money out of politics. Eighty-something [percent] believe that climate change is a real, systemic and urgent problem. Sixty-seven percent of Americans believe that immigrants are a positive force in the United States of America. I believe that I’m fighting for the American consensus.’[ii]
Following Republican Senator Yoho, calling her a ‘fucking bitch’ and that she was ‘out of her freakin mind’ (a common accusation against women, they are mad) on July 20th 2020 we saw her skill at verbal combat. Many women would have hidden with shame, but AOC called him out in the media and created a huge news story. Typically of the bully, when confronted, the senator both offered a public apology and denied saying the words. Her dignified take down of him went viral.
AOC said,
‘This issue is not about one incident. It is cultural. It is a culture of lack of impunity, of accepting of violence and violent language against women, and an entire structure of power that supports that.’[v]
We do not have an exact time, but on that day, the Moon was around 18′ Cancer and so was conjunct her 7th house Chiron. Chiron is the wound we cannot heal and it may have triggered experiences she had as a woman and a Latina. Several years later, AOC said she had been sexually abused. That day, Mercury was at 8′ 7 Cancer so it was conjunct her exalted Jupiter in the 7th, and opposite almost exactly her Saturn at 8’8 Capricorn and her Neptune at 9’45 Capricorn. So both the Moon and Mercury were triggering her Grand Cross. Notice Mercury rules her 7th house of open enemies, Yoho made no secret of his hatred and aggression towards her. Mars, the planet of male violence was at 12′ Aries on the day and so was applying to the opposition of her Mars at 16′ Libra and separating from a conjunction of her Moon at 3′ Aries and opposition her Mercury at 3′. The symbolism could not be more powerful.
Again, the Grand Cross activated, AOC was headline news and her dignified and pointed response doubtless encouraged others to expose this kind of behaviour. That powerful Jupiter, speaks to justice, fairness and the wider political and social implications of this type of behaviour, all in the soft, reasonable, kind tone of Cancer.
AOC on environmental politics,

Air signs are great idea-people, they have vision and are extremely persuasive. Librans combine this with love, Venus is the sign’s ruler, brings a vision for the betterment of humanity. And of course, they are articulate and have razor sharp minds.
