Half time blues

The Moon and Kendrick Lemar.

First of all, I could care less about football, especially American football, but unless you have been living under rock this past fortnight, you will have noticed there was a whole lot of heat, light and happiness about a certain rapper’s performance at the half time break in the Superbowl. The performance happened on the Sunday before the Full Moon, and I wondered if there was any good astrology happening. It turns out there was great astrology and a good showing of Moonology.

The first thing that stands out about his chart is that he has Spica rising, Spica is called the most fortunate Fixed Star and is located at 23’50 Libra 2 minutes from his Ascendant. Spica is

‘According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Venus and Mars; and, to Alvidas, of Venus, Jupiter and Mercury. It gives success, renown, riches, a sweet disposition, love of art and science, ‘1

So you expect the native to have all these gifts in the arts (Libra) and so he does. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in April 16th 2018, for his song Damn. On that day, there was a separating conjunction of the Sun and Uranus at 26′ and 28′ degrees of Aries so within orb of his successful Jupiter in Aries at 23′ 53 influential people (Jupiter conjunct 7th cusp) would have put his name forwards and voted for him. Jupiter in Aries makes him a trailblazer, he was the first rapper to win this prestigious award. Mars was at 16′ Capricorn 26, Lilith at 17 Capricorn 38 opposite his Natal Mercury at 16’24 Fortuna at 17’02 and Mars at 17’58 in Cancer. Again luck (Fortuna) helpful people (Mars ruling his 7th) with his words, music/poetry (Mercury).

Kendrick has a wide Grand Trine in water; Moon in Pisces in the 5th house, Venus, Mercury, Part of Fortune and Mars in Cancer in the 9th house and Pluto in Scorpio in the first house. Water is the creative, feeling-full element, often found in musicians and poets. He also has talked about his mental health struggles, breaking a big taboo among rappers.

The chart for the Superbowl halftime picks up the same planets. Mars was at 18’16 Cancer on his natal Mars at 17′ 58, the Moon having just passed over the conjunction at 21’53 and is applying to his MC at 26′ 23 Cancer. Saturn is conjunct his natal Moon, the Part of Fortune is conjunct his larger than life Jupiter. The MC is at 24′ Gemini 34 which is between his natal Chiron at 22’31 and his Sun at 26’10. His Sun would be centre stage (MC) at the game. I think the Chiron shows the wound of being a Black man in America. His set which only lasted around 10 minutes, referenced, Uncle Sam (the Blacks who went along with racism for a quiet life), ‘Forty Acres and a mule’ which was promised to the freed slaves, and of course never materialised, and his Grammy wining song ‘Not Like US’ which is a phrase racists use about other people, especially Black people.

The Mars, is conjunct his natal Mars at 18’16 Cancer just 18 minutes away. Mars in his natal chart ruling the 7th house of open enemies and his ‘diss track’ of rapper Drake who insulted his family and who, Lamar intimated was a paedophile2. Lamar’s Jupiter conjunct his descendant, strong in Aries, shows helpful friends, like Serena Williams who danced a ‘Crip dance’ also ‘dissing’ Drake who was an ex-lover of hers. I’m guessing their relationship did not end well.

Jupiter on the descendant can also show ‘big enemies’ and Drake is suing Lemar’s record company and Apple Music among others about this song, claiming it is defamatory. These types of lawsuits (the law is ruled by Jupiter) rarely end well for the claimant, as they bring the ‘insult’ to the public attention in a way that would not have happened otherwise. I am thinking of Amber Herd and Johnny Depp whose lawsuit(s) dragged their dirty laundry into the public domain demeaning both of them.

But back to the Moon. Often in mundane astrology the Moon is the trigger point to an event. The Full Moon was three days later, on Wednesday, 12th of February. Now, normally I would say the effects of lunations last two and a half days before and afterwards, and this is three days. However, there was the event, at the Superbowl and the effect which rippled out of the world of rap and American football into everywhere else. My Instagram feed was practically nothing else for at least a week afterwards. People were explaining the symbolism of the show, his words, the people, the music, to outsiders like me. The more it was explained the more radical the whole show became. This, at a time that American ‘democracy’ was being systematically undermined by 47 and his ‘First Lady Elon’.

So what does the Full Moon chart show? Saturn is conjunct the Ascendant at 17’48 Pisces, Saturn is at 18’43 Pisces both are conjunct his Natal Moon at 19′ Pisces 20. His Moon rules his Cancer MC. This event then is a culmination of public recognition (MC) for him of his past work (Saturn). The Full Moon at 24′ Aquarius/Leo is trine and sextile his helpful Jupiter in Aries, he brought many people with him in his performance. The Mars is even closer to his natal Mars at 17′ Cancer 51, six minutes away. He showed who were his friends, and who were his enemies and threw down a gauntlet with a great grin on his face, to his big enemy Drake, the crowds chanted the chorus ‘A minor’ in reference to Drakes alleged creepy sex life. That is such a showing for a big-hearted Jupiter in Aries and a cheeky Mars in Cancer.

The dance Kendrick did throughout this performance was repeated worldwide in the following days. Children in Africa, adults in Indonesia, Japan, Korea, and of course the USA and Europe filmed themselves doing the same steps, all with big grins on their faces. His Natal Pisces Moon, Pisces loves to dance, lead us on a feel-good, deeply meaningful, Full Moon ride.
