Uranus moves into Gemini

Next week, Uranus, the planet of revolutions and sudden change moves from staid Taurus, where it has been for 8 years into mutable, speedy Gemini. Uranus in Taurus was a hard slog as Taurus is fixed earth and is antithetical to the energy and chaos of Uranus. Uranus in Taurus brought the current state of the earth into the forefront, it also brought new awareness of how we use the earth’s resources as well as exposing greed and over consumption.

To my mind, Gemini is a much happier place for Uranus. Mutable Air, speedy, chatty, changeable, irreverent and funny Gemini ducks and dives and will be happy for the endings, upsets and reversals that Uranus offers us.

Given the grim news in the last few days, looking back to times Uranus was in Gemini suggests we are in for a bumpy ride. Particularly for the beleaguered United States. But of course, what happens there affects the whole world, for good or ill. Previous times when Uranus was in Gemini are: 1774-1782, 1858-1865, and 1942-1949.

The first Revolutionary War 1775-1783 was when the USA broke away from England, rejecting being ruled by a foreign King. The first shot of the war was taken at sunrise on 19th April 1775 when Uranus was at 0′ Gemini.

The American Civil War 1861-1865 was between the slave owning South and the North. The first shot was fired at 04.30 12th April 1861 in Charleston, South Carolina, when Uranus was at 8′ Gemini (conjunct the USA natal chart). Neptune was at 29′ Pisces (conjunct the fixed star Sheat) and entered Aries a few days later.

The next Uranus return was on May 31st 1944. D Day, on June 6th 1944, said to be the largest amphibian invasion in history (maybe), occurred a few days afterwards and was a pivotal moment in the war. France was liberated and the tide against the Nazi’s turned. They surrendered a year later.

Astrological chart of the USA Sibly natal chart with planetary positions and zodiac signs, dated July 4, 1776.

In the natal chart of the USA (known as the Sibly chart after the astrologer who collected the data) notice Uranus is conjunct the Descendant. This suggests how fickle American leaders are with their friends and enemies. Jupiter, the chart ruler, dignified in Cancer and conjunct a dignified Venus in the seventh shows warmth but also Cancerian clannishness, you are either in or out.

Uranus can show violence, and conjunct the Descendant, violent unstable and capricious partnerships. Indeed, the USA has only been at peace for 19 years of its existence1 so to my mind the chart is radical and, despite the Cancerian rhetoric, inscribed on the statue of Liberty,

‘Give me your tired, your poor. Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’

the USA can be both a bully and a warmonger.

Pluto, currently in very early Aquarius, will make the conjunction with the USA South Node in the second house in March 2027. This suggests a reckoning of their finances and their past; genocide and slavery come to mind. But before that, Pluto meets Uranus next year, on July 18th 2026, when Neptune will also be in the mix in Aries and Jupiter in Leo, all around the 4 degree mark.

Astrological natal chart showing the position of Uranus and Pluto with zodiac signs and degrees.

Note that Pluto is conjunct the MC (the government) and Uranus is in the first house (identity). The people (Moon) in detailed orientated orientated Virgo. Uranus Pluto is explosive, dangerous and ultimately transformative. This is a trine aspect which slightly softens the impact, easy aspects show that the signs involved are harmonious if not the planets themselves. The last Pluto Uranus trine was in Cancer/Pisces in 1921/2 which heralded the rise of totalitarian regimes such as Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Chinese and Spanish Communism, famine, revolutions in Greece and Turkey. Note that none of the totalitarian systems have survived to this day and some, Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin lasted only a few years although they caused a massive loss of life while they were in power.

But these are different times. As befits the move from earth signs, Capricorn (Pluto) and Taurus (Uranus) into connected and talkative air, the world now speaks to each other.

The live streaming of the genocide in Gaza has changed forever the political consciousness of the world. We have seen it. The lie of colonial settler ideology has been exposed, and once seen can never be forgotten. The people know. In America previously far right voices like Candice Owens and Tucker Carlson are exposing the damage and dishonesty of foreign wars. The rumblings are growing louder, all over the world. Not with our leaders, who represent the old style Capricorn paternalistic power dynamics, but the people using technology (Aquarius) connecting up for the common good who are demanding change on so many levels. The dots have been joined, it is understood the system needs to be changed, from patriarchal exploitation of people and planet to a fairer and more just and peaceful world.

So, although we may be in for a bumpy ride, my glass is still half full. Change is coming and it will be good.

post script: the election of the mayoral candidate for New York this week upset the old order, an unknown candidate won against big money. People, it seems are tired of being exploited by the rich and are organising for a fairer system.
